Every week from now until Christmas, I will be featuring a small business! This week’s feature is my family’s business, Snyder’s Furniture started by my mother many years ago.
In the mid 80’s my mother, Minnie, started a fabric store with several hundred dollars she had received from here parents’ estate. My mother, who was gifted in sewing, began making crafts which included pillows, quilts, wallhanging, ect. Two daughters, Eileen and I, began to help with the crafting. Many of my teenage years were spent either sewing crafts, working in the fabric store, or going to market. After I was married, I continued to sew quilts, pillows, and craft items for 20+ years. Occasionally, I worked at the store when the men went hunting and my children loved to go along.
As time went on my mother discontinued the market stand and had a permanent store in Plain and Fancy Farm. There we began to add small furniture items such as magazine racks, end tables, ect. Eventually my father, John, joined the business venture. At that time more and more furniture was brought into the store.
In 1999 the current showroom/store was built on the outskirts of the town of Intercourse, in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. They now offer furniture in oak, cherry, and maple, a wide variety of finishes, and almost unlimited hardware and style options. The business is currently managed by the 2nd and 3rd generation of Snyders. If you stop by this store you may meet John and Minnie’s daughter Eileen, grandchildren, Keith and Travis. A few other granddaughters work from their homes helping with officework.
